Husbandry morning

We did a bit of husbandry today, including abscess checking, microchipping and vaxing the last of the crias with Lambivac.

We had the vet out to check on the progress of Tannara's abscess. She picked off a scab and there was a bit of cheesy pus still coming out behind that. The cavity left was flushed out with water and a bit of Hibiscrub, followed by a skoosh of penicillin.

It seems that daily shots of antibiotic have helped the jaw bone swelling, leaving the remnants of the abscess underneath the skin on the outside of her jaw. The vet said she could see healthy pink tissue underneath that should help heal the area.

Overall, though, Tannara has improved a huge amount and is being very friendly - when not being held for procedures! She has put on weight noticably and has a nicely rounded tum now.

The next job on the list was microchipping our crias, two yearlings and one two-year-old, who had not been done for some strange reason. We got the vet to do them as the needles are HUGE and we didn't feel very confident. She managed no problem as she's so used to it. A couple of the crias bled a little but all seemed fine and dandy, and we got a reading on the scanner from each of the chips. The vet inserted them just by their ear.

The crias don't really like all the milling about and being handled, and they stuck close to the adults trying not to be seen. I love seeing how their cooperative caring arrangements, with one or two adults doing the babysitting.

I won't do microchips either, that needle is far to big!

Well not all girls are phased by the large needle...! I tried microchipping our cria last year for the first time and it was easy ! I read loads and was very anxious, had friends to help, (just in case!), but doing it behind the ear was trouble free and we wont ask the vet again! I think our vet charged about 50 euros so it's quite a saving doing it yourself as the gear and chips aren't expensive! (There are tips on the Internet on how to do it)
