Eye problems

Groove in summer.
Not what you want at this time of year - eyes have been giving us problems, right when there is sheet ice in the catch pen areas, making handling difficult.

Groove has had a seeping right eye, which has been flushed out with saline several times. The first time I washed out a blade of grass, and I was sure this was the problem, but a few days later it was gunky again, and this time I noticed he had a small ulcer on the cornea.

We called in the vet and he's now under treatment with antibiotic eye ointment, which seems to be working.

The other eyes causing problems are those of one of our main females, Alba.

We have noticed that she appears to be disorientated at times. She can keep up with the herd well and seems to know where everything is when it's at close range, but it's become obvious that she has some sort of visual problem.

We are really worried about her and the vet is going to have a look on Friday when she comes to check out Groove's eye.

Sorcha feeding Alba last winter.
Alba is one of our favourite girls and we would hate anything to happen to her. She's had no obvious external eye problems at all, so we're a bit mystified.

Any thoughts on this one are welcome. She's had a small light 'fleck' in one eye since a cria, but we don't know if it is related to her visual issues or not.

Fingers crossed she'll be OK. Time will tell.

Hello Coire Alpacas...we had a nasty corneal ulcer last Summer but it did eventually go. The vet gave anti-biotic injections in upper and lower eyelids and then a regime of drops 3 times a day and ointment twice a day. It took over 2 months to clear and at one point the injections were repeated as it got worse but no sign of it now. As it was Summer we protected the eye with a dust mask...you can see a photo on our blog (5th September 2010), there's a link to us on Barbara's blog.

Thanks Judi. We've had our fair share of these things - in 09 we had several girls with eye problems due to mites round the eyes thickening the skin and turning the eyelashes inwards. Ouch! We had lots of treatments done to those including injections into the eyelids, sutures etc. All healed well. I think he's just been unlucky and stuck it on something or got some grass or hay in it.

Hope they are going to be ok for you and the treatment is successful ...eyes are a difficult area to treat....Zeuss had a blocked tear duct last summer and it took about 3 months to clear....its now back to normal ! Lets hope that things are going to improve.....soon for them....Jayne
